Clouds, forests and crater lakes

Gazetted in 2006, Chebera Churchura is one of Ethiopia’s youngest national parks and a well kept secret. The Park covers some 1300 square kilometres and is home to a diverse range of fauna and flora. The terrain ranges from steep mountainsides, covered with cloud forests, to undulating hillsides broken by multiple rivers and streams that pour off the highlands. There are also 4 crater lakes tucked deep within the Park and these provide a great habitat for hippo and crocodiles.

Camping at the edge of the forest in Chebera Churchura is a wonderful experience. At times, the elephant will wander close to the edge of camp and most evenings you will hear the calls of lion and hyaena in the surrounding forest.

Chebera Churchura is all about walking in the wild. There are scouts here who accompany guests on walks into the forest to get up close and personal with the wildlife that lives here. In the right conditions and with the dense foliage, it is not uncommon to be extremely close to elephant while walking through here.

There are beautiful waterfalls as well as a hot spring in the Park and a few days spent here will rejuvenate the soul.
